One of our most popular trips in Ethiopia, this tour explores the most sought after destinations of Ethiopia. This journey has all the best of the country’s highlands and the north; the main highlights of the trip being the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, trekking in the Simien Mountains and an expedition into the wilds of the north to explore the Danakil Depression.

We also visit Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile, and the Blue Nile Falls where the great river cascades down into a massive gorge. Nestling on the bank of Lake Tana is the picturesque city of Bahir Dar, one the three great Ethiopian settlements we visit; the others are Addis Ababa and the historic city of Gondar, with its ancient castles and churches.

Day 1,Addis Abeba

Arrive Addis Abeba and be transferred to your Hotel .Overnight at Intercontinental Addis

Day 2,Fly Addis – Gondar – Drive to Semien Mountains – Sanka Ber Camp site

Transferred to the Airport for your domestic flight to Gondar .Be meet by Your Guide, Half Day tour the historic city of Gondar, which was first established in 1635 by Emperor Fasiledes as his seat of power and continued to serve as the capital of the Ethiopian Empire for the next 250 years and Gondar is perched at an altitude of 2,200m above sea level. Gondar is most famous for being the place where ancient Medieval castles (Camelot of Africa), also visit other impressive attraction such as the brilliantly decorated church of Debre Birhan Silassie and others. Being the base to explore the Semien Mountain National Park, precede the drive to the most favored hiking destination in Ethiopia which also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After arrive at Sankaber, we can have a tea break and perhaps have time to see some views and walk around Sankaber to Acclimatize to the altitude.

Day 3,(Sankaber – Geech) (18Km)

Trek to Geech (3,580m) about 5-6 hours .We start our walking by following the escarpment to Gean-Bar Falls ,about 1:30 hours. Here we can observe bird life such as vultures, European griffin, lammergeyers…etc and then one and half hour walk to Gean Bar River, where we have picnic lunch and then reach the village of Geech after climbing steadily for about 2 hours and camp at the beautiful sites situated 30 minutes further from the village of Geech.

Day 4,(Geech – Immet gogo- saha-Geech) (15Km)

This morning, we take 2 hours hike up to the summit of Immet gogo (3,926m) , where it is possible to see the low lands and gain an awesome perspective of this incredible volcanic mountain range .There are also options to walk to Geder got and Saha , 1:30 hour. The animals to be seen here are Gelada Baboon and Walia Ibex (Wild Goat) endemic to the Semien Mountains, living in the narrow vertical areas. Walk back to Geech which takes about 1:30 Hours.

Day 5,(Geech – Gondar) (Trek to main Road from Geech and then drive to Gondar ) ( 150Km)

Early Morning walk back to the Main road where your cars will be parked and the drive will continue to Gondar. Just a few Kilometers before Gondar the road passes through the village of Wolleka, a former Falasha (Ethiopian Jew) center. Although we stop to visit for Falasha pottery it is really just a faint reminder of the Falashas and their crafts. The deserted old Synagogue and grave yards still exits even though almost all Ethiopian Jews have been airlifted to Israel. Overnight at Goha Hotel

Day 6,(Gondar - Bahir Dar) (180Km)

Morning drive to Bahir Dar (means seashore) through a scenic drive with hills, fields and some areas of wetlands that are good for birds and growing rice.After your arrival check into Hotel and have lunch in one of the Lake Shore restaurant enjoying the view of Lake ( the largest Lake in Ethiopia , about 3,600 Square Km). Late in the afternoon a visit of the daily market and the Bezawit Palace ( Emperor Haileselassie Palace ). Over Night at Radisson Blue Bahir Dar Hotel

Day 7,(Bahir Dar – Blue Nile –Bahir Dar /Boat trip on Lake Tana) (30 Km)

Morning drive to a visit of Blue Nile Falls ( Tis Abay )(Water that Smokes).Makes for a pleasant trip through the farm land ( countryside) of Amhara people and generally is a half day excursion including the 30 Km drive .Height of the fall -45m and width of the fall is – 400m.Return back to Bahir Dar and have lunch in the Lake Shore and then boat trip on Lake Tana to visit one of the best monasteries Ura Kidane Mihret/Azwa Mariam on the Zege Peninsula .The Monasteries dates back in the 16th century and the churches contain a huge number of Murals painted up to 250 years ago. Day 8,(Bahir Dar – Lalibela) (300Km)

Morning drive to Lalibela through the famous village of Awura Amba where a unique cultural society of Framers settled on the hill side and has strong communal life. Day 9,LALIBELA

Full day visits of Lalibela at 2500m above sea level, intricately carved rock Hewn Churches in the 12th and 13th centuries by the greatest and most famous ruler, the 12th century Saint-King Lalibela. Some of the major churches of Lalibela that will be visited in the same compound include Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Mariam, Bet Amanuel, Bet Giorgis ,Bet Meskel, Bet Denagel ,Bethlehem, Bet Merkorios ,Aba Libanos and Bet Golgotha. Day 10,(LALIBELA –MEKELE) 520 KM

Drive to Mekele, one of big towns in Ethiopia. Set amidst the western escarpment of Rift Valley. You will pass through the towns like Alamata and Woldiya. Enjoy the deep Gorges and enormous Tertiary volcanic landscape that offers impressive views over the Afro Alpine Plateau. Overnight at Axum Hotel, in Mekele.

Day 11,(MEKELE – AHMED ELA) 200 KM

The drive takes you to Ahmed Ela passing through the western escarpment of the great Rift valley , Ahmed Ela Dallol ,one of Africa’s most striking geographical features of the earth surface even visible from space ,Danakil ,or Afar Depression , which encompasses a good portion of the Afar region , is one of the earth hottest and most inhospitable places, with many points more than 100 meters below sea level and noon time temperature soaring above 50”c.It is the site of a dry salt lake from which Ethiopians since time immemorial have obtained their amoles, or bars of salt , used both for consumption and , not long ago , as a regular currency. Mined by the Afar people for at least a millennium and a half, the salt is loaded on camels and taken to the highlands, where it is still in considerable demand and fetches a good price. Visit of all the Dallol vicinity that includes salt plain working area, Lake Asale (The Salt Lake), Dallol active colorful hot brine springs and fumaroles’ deposits of sulphur and phosphorous and salt dooms. We will have PICNIC Lunch in one of the shady and blow of air place. Also witness the striking age dating CAMEL CARAVAN which passes through the small village of Ahmed Ela and follow to some place walking and talking the experience of the workers which leads the camels. Day 12,(Ahmed Ela – Erta Ale) 300 Km

(Drive from Ahmed Ela to Erta Ale through the desert or passing through Abala Mountain) After dismantling the camping and have breakfast, the drive continues to Mount Erta Ale passing through Sand Dooms and recently flow of lava. After arriving in one of the Afar village called Dodom we will have a welcoming brief from the chief of the clan and he will inform us the security of Erta Ale. Have some Picnic lunch in the village. Then the drive continues until the Base of Erta Ale and the cars will stop in the parking area. We will be prepared for the 4 Hours trekking to the Summit of Erta Ale. Erta Ale is one of its kinds in the world because it has been staying active Lava Lake for the last 125 years and you can observe the Lake from every corner of the rim with very close distant. It is the result of the Triple divergent Tectonic plates in the east of Africa and it is the only place on earth where you can see the oceanic ridge on the surface next to Iceland. Arriving in Erta Ale will be around 9:00 Pm and upon arrival we can walk around 15 Minutes to be on the rim of the Volcano. Enjoy your stay around the Lava Lake and have all your Photo shoots. Camping around the ridge of the Lava Lake on the Floor with Mats and mattress.

Day 13 ,(Descend down from Erta Ale and drive Mekele) 350 KM

Early morning wakeup call and if anybody wants to see the Lava Lake AGAIN we will arrange the visit otherwise we start to descend down to the Base camp where our cars are parked and upon arrival we will have some minutes rest and breakfast. Then the drive continues to Lake Mekele. Overnight at Axum Hotel

Day 14,(ADDIS –MEKELE –INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT BACK HOME)

Transferred to the Airport for the flight to Addis Abeba. Upon your request a short city of Addis that includes the National Museum, Entoto View point and the grand open market including shopping. Complimentary dinner party at one of the traditional houses with folklore dance and coffee. Transferred to the Airport for the international flight back home.
